Outdoor Lighting Opens Up New World for Homeowners

WHEELING — Summer is on its way — it’s time to consider installing or replacing your exterior lighting.

Barb Morris, lighting consultant, at Cardello Electric in Wheeling, said many customers have been inquiring about exterior lighting for their patios and lawns for those lazy summer evenings.

Morris said she helps customers match the style of light to the style of their home, and she said it can it can be done at a reasonable price.

Morris said lanterns used to light the home exteriors can be purchased for about $40. She said lighting throughout an entire home — interior and exterior — can be installed for as little as $2,000.

Morris said the American Lighting Associations recommends homeowners spend 1-to-5 percent of the total cost of their home on lighting. She said lighting is something homeowners should take seriously.

“That’s an art,” Morris said referring to illuminating a homeowners landscaping.

“It’s not how much light, it’s where you put it. When we are doing a new home, it’s usually the last thing (the home owner) wants to do. They want to cut back, but it’s probably the worst thing you can do.”

Morris said products offered for exterior lighting can last for years, if not life.
