Police: Man Hit In Head With Ax
A Sunday evening altercation in East Wheeling sent one man to the hospital, wounded by an ax, and another to the Northern Regional Jail. Multiple officers responded to a call at the former Hazel-Atlas building on 15th Street about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Upon arriving, they found William Asbury, no age or address given, bleeding profusely. Asbury was bleeding from the ear and, according to Wheeling Police Chief Robert Matheny, would not tell the officers what had happened. ‘‘He was very uncooperative with the officers, so they called for an emergency crew and he was transported to (Ohio Valley Medical Center) with a wound to the ear,’’ Matheny said. While no information was obtained from Asbury, the officers decided to take matters into their own hands. They followed a trail of blood to a residence at 98 15th St., where, upon knocking on the door, they found Marion Wertenberger, 56, of that residence. The blood trail continued into the apartment, prompting the officers to question Wertenberger, who confirmed an altercation had occurred between Asbury and himself. ‘‘He told the officers that they had been drinking together and they became involved in an argument,’’ Matheny said. According to Wertenberger, that argument escalated when Asbury became physical with him. Wertenberger then struck Asbury in the ear with an ax, according to the report. Wertenberger was arrested and charged with malicious wounding.
