Depleted pitching staff haunts Post 3 in pair of losses

GLEN DALE — A worn out and run down Moundsville pitching staff is just what the Central New York Thunder Nationals needed Friday morning. The Thunder Nationals, who were shut out in each of their first two games of the Edgar Martin Beast of the East Baseball Classic, feasted on what’s left of Post 3’s pitching staff, drawing nine walks and banging out 13 hits in a 12-3 victory against Post 3 at Monarch Field. ‘‘We don’t have any pitching,’’ pointed out Post 3 manager Bill Burkett, whose team is without both of its aces for the forseeable future. Casey Defibaugh, 11-1 during the high school season, has a bad back, and Andrew Robinson, Magnolia’s three-year ace, has a rather serious cut on his finger. ‘‘I don’t know what we’re going to do (today),’’ Burkett continued. ‘‘The pitching is done. And I think they’re done.’’ Moundsville starter Zach Perkey walked the first three batters of the second inning, setting the table for CNY. Sean Cooney then blasted a deep drive to left that clanged off a pole on the rebuilt wall in left field and rolled 30 feet away from the outfielder. Inexplicably, only one run scored on the play. ‘‘Well, that was a baserunning blunder,’’ CNY manager Mike Pirro said. It didn’t come back to haunt the Thunder Nationals, who added one more in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Watkins. They posted four more in the third, half of that damage provided by Andrew Schreyack’s towering two-run homer to right-center.
