Pens-Wings: It’s Time to Look Ahead
One team plays in a place often times referred to as ‘‘Hockeytown,’’ while the other comes from a city that is defined by its world-renown football team. Yet these two franchises from the opposite sides of hockey hierarchy seem destined to collide.
It’s the Whiteout against the Octapus.
It’s speed vs. speed, skill vs. skill.
It’s old vs. young.
It’s what NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman likely dreams of when he lays his head on the pillow for a good night’s rest, which if things hold true to form, there figure to be plenty of those in his future.
It’s the Detroit Red Wings against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with team sports’ most hallowed trophy —Lord Stanley’s Cup — to the winner.
But perhaps the greatest thing about that for diehard Penguins fans? Good seats will probably be available, as thousands of empty chairs have been visible at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena during each round of these playoffs.
The Penguins may have nearly lost the franchise to Kansas City, though no fault of the fans, but they fill their building every night. How can you call yourself Hockeytown and not sell out playoff games is beyond me.
Think I’m getting a little ahead of myself?
If you do, I politely disagree.
Only two teams in NHL history —the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders — have come back from down 3-0 in a series.

There’s no debating the fact Mark Hinerman was handed the keys to the John Marshall football program under trying circumstances. It was two years ago, and his good friend, then-coach Mike Linsky had just passed away.

The knock on Pittsburgh Penguins winger Marian Hossa was that he becomes invisible roughly the time the puck drops on the postseason. Until Sunday, I wasn’t so sure everything we had been hearing from afar wasn’t true.
