Weir Is Looking For More

March 16, 2010

WEIRTON — The senior class at Weir has been one of the most successful in the history of the school. Four sectional championships, three regional titles and an OVAC championship are just some of the accomplishments the Red Riders have accumulated during the past four seasons. But the one thing missing on that resume is a victory in the West Virginia Class AA Boys’ Basketball Tournament. No. 3 Weir tips off the tournament at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday against Sissonville at the Charleston Civic Center, making the trip south for the third straight season (fifth in six seasons) and looking to break a two-game losing streak in the Big Dance. “For us to be down there for three straight seasons, it’s a great statement for the dedication of our players,” Weir coach Mike Granato said. “They have spent a lot of time playing basketball in the summer and they have wanted to get back to this moment.” Early Brogdon, Shawn Burns, Anthony Cato, L.J. Campbell, Justin Horstman, and Kyle Taylor are the six seniors looking to win their first state tournament game and more. Burns and Horstman played significant minutes two seasons ago, while most of this team was on the floor last season. It’s that experience that has helped Weir calm down in difficult situations — a tournament-tested team with its eyes on this being a business venture rather than a vacation from class.
