Zellous’ 34 points lead No. 19 Pitt past W.Va.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Shavonte Zellous had 34 points and No. 19 Pittsburgh scored the game’s last eight points to beat West Virginia 72-63 in the Big East opener for both schools Sunday.

Xenia Stewart scored 12 points as Pitt (11-2, 1-0) earned its 10th win in 11 games and the 100th for coach Agnus Berenato in her six seasons at the school.

Takisha Granberry scored 22 points for West Virginia (10-3, 0-1), which rallied from a 57-47 deficit to close to within one point at 64-63 on Granberry’s basket with 2:13 remaining. But Zellous scored on Pitt’s next two possessions, and the Panthers added four free throws in the final minute to win.

Zellous, who also had five rebounds and four assists, scored twice and Stewart and Taneisha Harrison each hit 3-pointers during a 10-0 run that gave Pitt its 57-47 lead.

Liz Repella scored 18 points and Sarah Miles had 14 for West Virginia.
