GOP To ‘Unleash Capitalism’

His reference pertains to the book “Unleashing Capitalism” edited by West Virginia University Economics professor Russell Sobel. In the book, experts offer suggestions on how the state can improve its economy — beginning with tax and lawsuit reform, and the repeal of prevailing and minimum wage laws.
“‘Unleashing capitalism’ will be our party platform next year,” McKinney said. “Our philosophy will be, ‘It’s the economy, Stupid.’
“We’ve spent too much time in recent years on gun control and abortion. The Democrats are picking up on that now, and this will be something that separates us.”
He promises the GOP won’t abandon moral principles, but that these already have become the core of Republican beliefs and that the party needs to move forward.
“The basic values of the Republican Party are always pro-life, and against gun control,” McKinney said. “Nothing changes, except now we want to talk about the economy.”
McKinney and Sobel were among those attending an “old fashioned picnic” for Republicans Sunday at Eric Freeland’s farm on Windsor Heights in Brooke County. Copies of Sobel’s book were available for $10 each at the event.
McKinney told those present the state GOP won’t be running “117 separate campaigns” for state legislative offices next year, but that there will be just one concentrated Republican campaign.
Presently, Democrats out number Republicans 23 to 11 in the state Senate, and 72 to 28 in the House of Delegates.
“We just have to elect enough Republicans next year to make the changes,” McKinney said.
Republican 2008 state legislature candidates present at the picnic were Fred Brunner, 2nd Senate District; Ron Morris, 4th House District; and Patrick McGeehan, 1st House District.
“We need people who know economics to run for office,” Sobel told the supporters.
“The ideas put forth in my book are more consistent with those of the Republican Party than those of the Democratic party.”
Also speaking to the crowd was former Delegate Chris Wakim, R-Ohio, who ran unsuccessfully for the 1st District U.S. House seat in 2006. He said he may seek to run again against incumbent U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va. in 2008.
“I’ll have to speak with the masters in Washington first,” Wakim said. He plans to travel to Washington within the next two weeks.
West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland said many have expressed concern over her decision to not seek re-election in 2008. She had wanted to have more time to care for her 90-year-old parents.
“Until you’ve been there, you don’t know what all caring for your parents entails,” Ireland said.
“Rest assured you will see more of Betty Ireland in politics. I hope to be somewhere where I can do something about the economy and health care.”
McKinney said the party is currently focused on electing delegates to its first-ever state presidential convention on February 5. Registration for on-line voting begins Oct. 1.
Speaking at Sunday’s picnic were representatives of three Republican presidential candidates in 2008 — Fred Thompson, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. The representatives provided information about their candidates to those present.

People kill people and when they do they like to use guns. Between 1979 and 2001, gunfire killed 90,000 children and teens in America Residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience a suicide than residents of homes without gun Keeping a gun in the house increases by 2.7 times the risk that a resident will die in a homicide. Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence. In one year, more children and teens died from gunfire than from cancer, pneumonia, influenza, asthma, and HIV/AIDS combined. The FBI's Crime in the United States estimated that 66% of the 16,137 murders in 2004 were committed with firearms. Republicans who say they are pro-life and pro-gun are seriously deluded. And I'm sure a good percentage of them also support capital punishment. How do they reconcile killing people with being pro-life? Denial, ignorance, selfishness, callousness, credulousness, stupidity...

"Also, government (democracy) and an economic system (capitalism) are two different things and the problem arises when government involves itself in the economic system. That is the difference between a liberal and a conservative." What BS!!! You have to be blind not to see what happens when 7 years of conservatives involve themselves in the economic system. Remember the SURPLUS? Read Greenspans new book.

Veneer - Actually the basic values of the GOP are not at odds. You will be surprised to know that in areas with the highest gun registrations, crimes committed with guns are lower than those areas with low gun registrations. You will also be interested to know, I'm sure, that seldom, if ever, is a registered gun owner involved in a crime concerning a gun. You see, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Also, government (democracy) and an economic system (capitalism) are two different things and the problem arises when government involves itself in the economic system. That is the difference between a liberal and a conservative.

Talking taxes, lawsuits, wages and economics is going to take too much thinking and the American public doesn't like that much. The reason gay marriage and abortion are such big issues is because for most people those are moral or gut issues so they can just react and vote without thinking. This cracks me up: “The basic values of the Republican Party are always pro-life, and against gun control." Because.. more guns equals more life, right? Of course! Though it also shows how people prefer to think and vote with their gut, that a party's basic values would be so at odds with one another.

Tax Reform=even more money for the wealthy while our infrastructure falls apart. Lawsuit Reform=allow corporations to continue to put poorly designed products on the market at no risk to their bottom line? Repeal of minimum wage=make families live on wages on the 1980s. GOP wont abandon Moral Values? Cut me a break. Have you read any newspapers for the last 7 years? Pro-Life? That is only before you are born. Abandon hope all ye who go here!!!

The big question is do we want more globalist intervention in the economies and governments of other sovereign nations and in our own as advocated by Russell Sobel or do we want a true free market economy without government regulation? The GOP and the DNC party faithful are no different when it comes to their big government agendas. The US Constitution in its original intent is the standard for government. Everything else is just so much garbage.
