Preemptive Strike May Be Necessary
By the News-Register
POSTED: February 7, 2008
An unpleasant side-effect of U.S. troops’ increasing success in Iraq apparently has been to prompt al-Qaida leaders to divert some resources from that country — and into a new emphasis on mounting an attack in the United States. That was the report given to members of a Senate committee this week by Director of National Intelligence Mitch McConnell.
He told senators that al-Qaida is involved in “the last key aspect of its ability to attack the U.S. — the identification, training and positioning of operatives ...”
Since Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida has been unable to carry through with any major attacks inside the United States. That appears to have been, in part, because of excellent intelligence regarding terrorist cells in our country. We probably will never know with certainty, but indications are that some cells intent on making such attacks have been broken up.
Part of McConnell’s report that is troubling is his belief that al-Qaida is having some success in recruiting Westerners for attacks in the United States. Clearly, that would make it easier for al-Qaida to launch such assaults in our homeland.
What McConnell did not discuss — in public, at least — were U.S. efforts to infiltrate al-Qaida. At some point, U.S. officials should consider a preemptive strike against al-Qaida bases, wherever they may be located, as a means of disrupting the terrorists’ plans to attack us.

I am sure that the U.S.knows much more than they will admit. The longer this thing lasts, the more money is in circulation. Orders for new equipment, repair old. More in the military. It's an ongoing thing.
