Lewton Paces WP in Sweep of South

Magnolia bounces back, hammers Blue Devils, 7-1

Wheeling Park remained unbeaten by sweeping a doubleheader with visiting Parkersburg South during high school baseball action Saturday at West Liberty.

Park defeated South 3-0 in the first game and followed it up with a 4-3 victory in the second.

Game one saw Christian Lewton switch roles and fire a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 batters against three walks. Brad Guckert and Heeth Beecher each drove in runs via base hits for Park (4-0).

In game two, Lewton was at it again, this time connecting on a one-out single with the bases loaded, scoring the winning run in the seventh inning.

Guckert added another two singles while starting pitcher Cody Bishop, who struck out four but didn’t factor into the decision, added a two-run double.

Magnolia 7, St. Marys 1

At New Martinsville, Magnolia got back on track as Steve Zajdowicz drove in three runs with a pair of singles and a double in a victory against St. Marys.

Andrew Robinson had a two-run base hit, Kale Street and Mason Rine each drove in a run and Kyle Kimble fanned two batters, allowing one run during six innings of work.

Bishop Donahue 8-9

Hundred 6-4

At Glen Dale, Mike Matheny struck out 11 batters in game one and Michael Angalich followed by fanning 14 in game two as Bishop Donahue swept Hundred.

Angalich drove in three runs with three singles while Jared Angalich had a two-run base hit for the Bishops in game one. John Hill had two RBI on a pair of singles and a double in game two. Matheny added two RBI with a single and a double.

Hundred was led by Corey Kimble’s two-run double. Kimble struck out 11 in defeat.

Weirton Madonna 8-11 Paden City 7-1

At Weirton, David Thomas sacrificed home the winning run in game one and Weirton Madonna, behind three RBI apiece from Max Nogay and Lou Comis, coasted in game two of a sweep of Paden City.

Nogay added a solo shot in the first game while Jared Magnone drove in a pair.

Game two saw George Austin Pitchok plate two runners.

Paden City was led by Justin Grimes’ pair of RBI singles, with Chris Loy also driving in a runner.

At Glen Dale, John Marshall got two strong outings from Dee Gamble and Megan Kinnick as the Monarchs (2-2-1) captured their own softball invitational.

Gamble struck out 11 against Bridgeport, W.Va. in the first round as Shelby Wilson had two singles with an RBI.

Oak Glen edged Cameron 2-1 in the semifinals, thanks to an RBI single from Maria Gala in the eighth inning. Erin Shuman fanned 13 and Cameron’s Devan Shields struck out 10 in defeat.

In the finals, Claire Pockl, Gamble and Lauren Francis all drove in a run for the Monarchs against Oak glen, with Francis’ coming via a triple. Megan Kinnick struck out eight in the one-hit shutout for JM.

Cameron, despite a combined no-hitter from Janet Peterson and Shields, fell to Bridgeport in the consolation finale.

Magnolia 7

Tyler Consolidated 2

At New Martinsville, Alicia Hinerman drove in a run with two singles and Bri Carr, Tory Greene and Corinne Murdock all doubled as Magnolia improved to 2-2 with a victory against rival Tyler Consolidated.

The Blue Eagles’ Ashley Simmons got the victory, fanning five and walking four while scattering six singles.

Bishop Donahue 15-12

Hundred 0-0

At McMechen, Brittany Legg and Sarah Blazer each threw one-hit shutouts as Bishop Donahue improved to 3-1 with a sweep of Hundred (0-3).

Sam Burciaga had a bases-clearing triple and game one while Sara Carpenter drove in two with a double.

Game two saw Ashley Hill’s two-run dobule pace a 12-hit attack.

Taylor Simpson and Sarah Burley each had a single for the Hornets.

Weirton Madonna 16-8, Paden City 1-0

At Weirton, Erin Birkheimer and Samantha Myers drove in two runs apiece as Weirton Madonna took two from Paden City.

Rebecca Stewart and got two victories for the Blue Dons, fanning a combined 20 batters in 10 innings of work.

Weir 13-14, Grafton 0-1

GRAFTON —Weir unloaded on homestanding Grafton to earn its first victories of the season.

Liz Cowden, Megan Morgan and Tiffani Swagger combined to allow just five hits while striking out 17 batters in two games.

Elise Cowden had three singles, a double, a triple and a three-run home run in two games, finishing with nine RBI.

Swagger had four total hits, two in each game.

Pitt-Johnstown 10-4, West Liberty 3-3

JOHNSTOWN, Pa — A three-run blast from junior Cory Finley was one of few bright spots for West Liberty as the Hilltoppers dropped a pair to Pitt-Johnstown.

Sean Jackson drove in a run on a single in game two as UPJ combined for 13 runs and 20 hits in two games
