Bethlehem Preparing to Clean Streets
By WILLIAM DANIEL
POSTED: April 12, 2008
BETHLEHEM — Spring cleaning has begun in homes across the Ohio Valley. Now, in Bethlehem, the process is moving to the streets.
A street sweeper manned by workers from the city of Wheeling will begin cleaning the streets of Bethlehem at 7 a.m. today. Bethlehem Mayor Garrett ‘‘Rhett’’ Daniel said the process will probably take about nine or 10 hours to complete and will cost the village of Bethlehem between $800 and $900.
In case of inclement weather, the street cleaning project will be moved to April 19.
Daniel is asking residents of the village to help the road crew if possible.
‘‘We’re not closing off any streets, but if anyone can pull into their driveway or yard, that would be wonderful,’’ said Daniel.
According to Daniel, side and residential streets will receive the most thorough cleaning, but state roads will not be overlooked.
Daniel noted residents of Bethlehem did not always have this amenity and had to carry out the project by hand.
‘‘I’m glad the village of Bethlehem can do it for residents,’’ said Daniel. ‘‘Up until three years ago, the streets were swept by hand by the road crew or residents did it.’’
