Post Office to Reopen After Shooting

July 22, 2008
By ANNIE DIMMICK

DALLAS, W.Va. - As investigators piece together the events that led to the shooting death of a female postmaster Friday, the U.S. Postal Service is working to ensure everyone receives their mail.

The Dallas Post Office in Dallas, W.Va., has been closed since that day, when Lua Zervos-Wolverton, 43, of Glen Easton, was shot twice. Todd Dolin, 39, of Moundsville, was arrested hours later in Zanesville, Ohio, and has been charged as a fugitive from justice wanted for first-degree murder.

According to U.S. Postal Service communications specialist Tad Kelley, mail service was interrupted for a brief time Friday but later resumed. He said even though the post office will remain closed for most of this week, all residents will still receive mail.

"The Dallas Post Office is expected to reopen this Friday," Kelley said. "Mail service is being continued out of the Valley Grove Post Office in the interim."

Kelley said the Dallas office only has one delivery route and that there have been no problems in delivering mail so far.

"There have been no problems that I am aware of," Kelley said. "Stamps and other services are available at Valley Grove, Wheeling and West Finley (Pa.) offices in terms of proximity for customers. Customers receiving notices left in their mailboxes, for packages or signature mail that needs to be picked up, can retrieve their mail from the Valley Grove office."

Fact Box

Todd Dolin, arrested Friday for the murder of Dallas Postmaster Lua Wolverton, is back in Marshall County after facing a judge in Zanesville, Ohio, for the first time Monday. According to Marshall County Prosecutor Jeffrey Cramer, Dolin waived his right to an extradition hearing and was transported back to Marshall County, where he was lodged at the Northern Regional Jail.

He added that post office box customer mail for Dallas customers is also available at the Valley Grove office.

"We appreciate our customers' patience during this short alteration of services," Kelley noted.

The Wheeling post office has hours Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for retail assistance.
