City Seeks Help With Removal of Feral Chickens
By SHELLEY HANSONSome unwanted residents of Kings Creek Bowl may believe the sky is falling when work to remove them from the area gets under way.
For years, city officials and residents have tried to rid the Kings Creek area of wild chickens - but the fowl were just too fast. Councilman Harold ''Bubba'' Miller said between 40 and 50 wild chickens have lived in the neighborhood for some time.
''They've chased young kids and bitten a couple people,'' Miller noted.
But the feral fowl may soon be banished.
During a special meeting slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Weirton City Council members are expected to consider approval of a resolution that will hire the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services to remove the chickens.
The cost of the removal service is $3,904 and would involve the use of nets, Miller said.
''We've tried to catch them, but it's difficult to do,'' Miller noted. ''It's a health issue for the community. They will continue to multiply.''
Miller said the chickens once had owners.
''We fined them once, but they claimed they weren't theirs,'' Miller noted.
According to the resolution, the USDA has a plan deal with the feral chickens in a safe manner. Miller said the federal workers will ''bomb'' the chickens with multiple nets.
He noted there are 40-50 homes in the neighborhood known as Kings Creek Bowl.
Miller is unsure how long it will take for the actual chicken removal work to begin after the proposed resolution is approved.
