Radicals Are Divided Over Wind Power

September 5, 2008
By the News-Register

Wind power is good, say Sen. Barack Obama and some radical environmentalists. No, wait, it's bad, insist some in the same community of thought. It's a great alternative to coal-fired power plants proclaim some liberals. Not in my backyard, warn others.

Confused? So are radicals who seem to be united on just one thing: Whatever the cost to Americans, they want to eliminate use of coal for any purpose.

A group in southern West Virginia has suggested that a wind power facility should be built atop a mountain where coal mining has been proposed. The group has been honored by Co-op America, an organization that promotes use of sustainable energy resources.

Obama's energy "policy," which calls for increasing the amount of electric power generated by wind turbines. But it does not fit into the thinking of many radical environmentalists, who oppose wind turbine towers for various reasons. One liberal, Sen. Ted Kennedy, opposes a plan to erect wind towers in the ocean near his family's Massachusetts home. It would spoil the view, opponents of the plan say.

Environmental radicals often seem in favor of wind power as a concept - but opposed to it in practice. Their ambivalance on wind power gives no reason for confidence in any energy plan they may espouse.
