Enforce Ethics Rules in Ohio
By The IntelligencerOhio Gov. Ted Strickland has maintained, since before taking office, that integrity would be the keystone of his administration. If he intends to stick to that pledge, he should fire Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the state Department of Job and Family Services.
It has become clear that Jones-Kelley allowed her department to be used for political purposes - sometimes with her direct involvement. Ohioans of all political persuasions should be outraged about that. They should not tolerate it.
Complaints against Jones-Kelley fall under two general headings:
- First, she ordered her staff to look up personal records on Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, the Toledo-area resident who became renowned as "Joe the Plumber" during the general election campaign. "Joe's" complaint about taxes was used by then-candidate for president John McCain, a Republican. Jones-Kelley is a Democrat.
Last week, state Inspector General Tom Charles reported results of his investigation into the matter. There was no legitimate purpose for Jones-Kelley to have agency records searched for information on Wurzelbacher, Charles reported.
Jones-Kelley insists that, "my only intent was to fulfill my agency's fiduciary responsibility to Ohio's families." She has yet to explain how searching records for information on Wurzelbacher had anything to do with that. Obviously, she cannot provide such an explanation - because she isn't being candid.
- The second complaint against Jones-Kelley is that she used her office to assist in fundraising for the campaign of then-candidate, now president-elect Barack Obama. That issue already has been investigated - and concrete proof of the allegations has been found.
Last week, Strickland placed Jones-Kelley on a one-month, unpaid suspension. Yet he has resisted calls that she be fired for abusing her position.
Make no mistake about Jones-Kelley: What she did was not as a result of errors or misunderstandings about ethics. She understood fully what she was doing - and should face consequences for her misdeeds.
If Strickland allows her to stay in office, he will be admitting that his pledges in regard to ethics were no different than those made so often in the past by other politicians who had no intentions of keeping their promises. In other words, Strickland will be admitting that "change" really isn't on the horizon. We think Strickland meant what he said about ethics. If so, he should fire Jones-Kelley immediately.

wv26003, likewise I wouldn't expect you to understand freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and capitalism. I firmly believe that most Americans believe this newspaper is fully within its Constitutional rights to publish the truth about businesses it owns, to choose what to publish and what NOT to publish, and to make money for it's owners and employees. Pretty much like every other newspaper and business in the country, at least for now.

wv26003, this paper promoted Oglebay skiing in three articles last year, and will probably do it again this year. Maybe they don't cover Canaan, Snowshoe, or Timberline because they are considerably farther away than Seven Springs - they're definitely not a one-day ski trip for most of us. You might as well ask why they don't cover ski resorts in Vermont. And why should they only cover businesses in West Virginia? Some of us readers live in PA and OH.

If Joe had been a Democrat the ACLU would be camped outside the state capital screaming for her head! And I'm confused! A fluff piece on Seven Springs and a violation of civil liberty relate to credibility in what way? And the NR is responsible for McCains defeat! WOW Jones-Kelly should be fired (and possibly jailed)!

LTRRTL I'm not familiar with any Obama Toe sucking press releases. Feel free to post some. Yes, the Ohio woman should be punished, just like the folks in the Justice Department leaks should be- you know the ones: the ones who leaked the ACORN investigation for political reasons and the ones who leaked information about Obama aunts. You're consistent, right?LOL

LTRRTL You seem to have difficulty with basic definitions. Liar: Someone not telling the truth. He did not tell the truth when he stated he was getting ready to buy a business. He also lied when he stated he was a plumber, as he basically is a handyman, not a licensed plumber. Even funnier, he owes back taxes. He also tried to call Obama a socialist, when he, himself, has taken money from others in the form of welfare. Hypocrite: A person who pretends to be what he or she is not. There, hope that helps clear up some basic things for you.

LTRRTL Common ordinary person speaking truth to power? Are you kidding me? The guy wasn't buying a business, wasn't a licensed plumber, and had been on welfare. I call that a lying hypocrite.

Yeah, editor. Quit pointing out the facts about crimes committed by us Democrats and stick to the real news about Joe the Plumber's LACK OF A LICENCE! We the people want to know about HIM, not about some low level Democrat just using the power of the government to harass and intimidate him. Oh, but please do keep up the Seven Springs reports on the front page of this website, since some of us love to ski but refuse to buy any newspaper that would put ski reports on the front page.

This paper is an ethics watchdog??? ha ha ha ha ha ha. How about some 7 Springs advertisements. What if Jones-Kelley was a republican - we wouldn't hear a word. Editor - Every newspaper and electronic transmission should indicate that this news is biased and not reality based.

You sound like a broken record. This is the umpteenth item in this paper going after Jones-Kelley over Joe the Idiot Un-Licensed Plumber.Any state agency gone after ol Joe for his failure to have a license yet? That would be more of a story.
