Enforce Strict Immigration Laws
The IntelligencerArizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has received mixed reviews from those who believe the United States is doing too little to crack down on illegal immigration. Her views on the subject will become much more important next year, when she becomes the nation's new secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
President-elect Barack Obama announced Monday that he will nominate Napolitano for the post. There is virtually no doubt that she will be confirmed by the Senate.
Obviously, the Department of Homeland Security is one of the most important in Washington. Terrorist attacks last week in India made that clear.
But the department also is in charge of enforcing immigration laws. With as many as 12 million illegal immigrants in the country now, that issue is a very important one.
As we noted Tuesday in an editorial about Obama's choices for secretary of state and secretary of defense, Cabinet members' primary duty is to do what their presidents tell them. Napolitano, then, will have to abide by Obama's policies on illegal immigration.
Still, she will have input in formulating those policies, particularly in regard to the tricky details of how to keep illegal immigrants out of the United States and what to do about them if they get here.
Napolitano has criticized plans for the lengthy fence along the U.S.-Mexico border. At the same time she has called for more Border Patrol agents to interdict illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. She also favors a sort of "amnesty" for some illegal immigrants, providing they pay stiff fines.
It remains to be seen precisely how Napolitano and Obama will address the problem. We urge them to reject politically correct suggestions, however, in favor of strict enforcement of immigration laws.

I believe it is up to the States to pass laws like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. If all 50 States would pass a law, the ILLEGAL ALIENS could soon be out of here. I have to ask, what gives them the RIGHT to be here in the first place? They come here, take our jobs, drop their ANCHORS that we pay for, then we have to school them, take care of their health and the list goes on. When is this going to end? And let's not forget the BILLIONS upon BILLIONS that is sent out of this Country by the ILLEGAL ALIENS. How is this helping our economy, may I ask? Look at California, 3 million ILLEGAL ALIENS there and it costs the State $9 BILLION a year to keep them. Anyone see a problem with that? Let's work to get the ILLEGAL ALIENS out of this Country! They don’t belong here!

Agreed that Bush was weak on the issue, but I doubt anyone will touch this political 3rd rail! They see only potential voters and not what illegal immigration has done to this country! Buzz & Brit make great points, but political correctness will yet again weaken us as a nation! The fence has made progress but without enforcement at the corporate/employer level it's effectiveness is limited. Anytime unemployment is brought up, illegal immigration should be a part of the discussion!

We need the SAVE ACT and E-verify used for every business and NOT Amnesty. E-verify does not discriminate against RACE, Religion, SEX or physically capability only your Citizenship and your LEGAL right to be and work in United States. If we can stop Predatory business owners from hiring then the Illegal Aliens will not Stay and return to their native Countries. This ISSUE is not about RACE, but Governments Federal/State/LOCAL not doing their jobs, because big and small business owners want cheap workers and no labor laws to bother with. Its called GREED!
