SMITH, Roger F., 72, of Glen Dale, W.Va., died Sunday, December 21, 2008, in Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 23, 1936, in Glen Dale, the son of the late W. Vernon Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Chison Smith.
Roger attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School, Wheeling Central Catholic High School, West Liberty State College and Wheeling Jesuit College.
He served in the United States Army National Guard; he was a Life Insurance Agent for 52 years and worked as Owner and General Agent of the Roger Smith Insurance Agency; a 16 year member of the Jaycees where he was President of the local chapter and National Director of the United States Jaycees.
With this organization he was instrumental in starting the first chapter in the West Virginia Penitentiary and started the "Beat the Rocks" campaign to widen Route 2 south of Moundsville for safer travel.
He was President of many civic organizations such as; Wheeling Moundsville Chapter Red Cross, WVU Extension Service, Catholic Charities, Bishop Donahue High School Board, St. Jude Parish Council, and the Moundsville Rotary Club of which he was a 45 year member.
Roger proudly served the Marshall County 4-H and FFA Livestock Club, and was awarded an Honorary Farmer Degree from the WV Future Farmers of America; and a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 1907, Moundsville. He worked with the Cursillio movement and the Teens Encounter Christ Program; he was an avid golfer and a Board Member of the Moundsville Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rowe of North Carolina.
Roger was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Augusta "Gussie" Schreyer Smith; four daughters, Lynn (Mark) Sampson and Joyce (Lance) Bibey both of Glen Dale, Susan Smith of Wheeling and Jill (Paul) Cafolla of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Joel "Chy" (Jill) Smith of Morgantown and Chad (Lisa) Smith of St. Clairsville. He is also survived by his pride and joy, 20 grandchildren, Jessi, Scott, Adeline and Sampson Hannig, Heidi and Mike Sforza, Mark and Dale Sampson, Holleigh, Michael and Stephanie Rowe, Chelsea Cafolla, Shane, Luke, Chloe, Tristen and Lexie Smith, Hailey Snyder, Boyd and Lane Bibey.
In addition he is survived by his two brothers, W. Vernon "Bud" Smith, Jr. and David (Eleanor) Smith both of Glen Dale and his sister, Sara (John) Walters of Moundsville and over 100 nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a celebration of his life at St. Jude Church, 710 Jefferson Ave., Glen Dale on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at 11a.m.
The family will receive friends at the Church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at 11a.m.
