Golf Carts Destroyed

Country Club Fire Considered Suspicious

WHEELING - Thirty-two golf carts and one utility cart were destroyed in a suspicious fire early today at the Wheeling Country Club.

The blaze, reported before dawn, also caused a significant amount of damage to the portion of blacktop the carts were parked on as well as the surrounding terrain and pool furniture at the facility.

Lt. Steve Rogers, who is a fire investigator with the Wheeling Fire Department, said today the fire deptartment got a call at 4:55 a.m. that there was a fire at the Wheeling Country Club.

He said when fire crews arrived, the golf carts were fully engulfed in flames. Rogers said it took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Susan Crall, manager for the Wheeling Country Club, said a short time after their security alarm went off, a passing motorist called to report the blaze as well. She said the carts are "obviously" a complete loss.

"The pavement is not even two weeks old," Crall said, referring to the blacktop on which the carts were parked.

She said there was damage to parts of the golf course as well. Crall said officials told her they believe the damage to the golf course was caused by a pickup truck, judging by the wheel marks and the spacing of the marks.

Rogers said he was called for an investigation, but since it is out of the department's jurisdiction, he had to notify the Triadelphia Volunteer Fire Department. Rogers said they will lend assistance to the department in the matter. He said the state fire marshal was notified as well and would be on the scene today.

The property is located in the Triadelphia VFD district, but an error in dispatching sent the Wheeling Fire Department to the scene.

That club has been in a tight financial situation for years. I wouldn't, however, suggest that the damage was....Oh who am I fooling? This was suspicious on many levels and I would not be shocked with any revelations about improprieties.

"Old Money!" Do you mean the members of the Country Club all have "Old Money"?!? My brother is a member that club! Where is my share of the Old Money?? I did not get any!! Come on, Bro - cough it up! I know you have it, I read it in the newspaper. I'm telling Phil and you are really going to be in trouble!

WVU Gator2's use of the Anti-Semetic comment "Jewish Lightning' is hate-mongering.

His ignorance is apparent by his misspelling of the slur. The Intelligencer and News Register are doing themselves and our community a great disservice by not monitoring or moderating open chats more carefully.

Hate comments are not welcome.

Bored punks did this, ones who knew where the carts were parked at night. Which means either a nearby resident or an employee or an ex-employee. But probably under age 25. I doubt the insurance scam theory, though I understand the general cynicism. They'll get caught...sooner or later.

does oglebay pay fire service fees on the carts?

i hope i am totally incorrect about arson for profit. And if so, Im sorry for my post. Im too used to seeing things burn after the final "going out of business signs' are finished in this county, especially 'downtown'.

When I read some of these ridiculous comments, I wonder why I even visit Wheeling a few times a year. Obviously, it is not to have an intelligent conversation with some of the people.

What a stupid thing for someone to do.

The same thing happened last summer at a golf course in Lima, Ohio. Three teenagers camping out a half mile away thought it would be fun to torch some golf carts. Those jerks barely got a slap on the wrist from the judge when they were caught, and each mommy and daddy blamed the other punks for actually setting the fires.

Now if Oglebay had not closed CADDY CAMP the Wheeling Country Club would have CADDIES for Saturday morning.

What old money is getting away with this too? Thats just an uneducated slander. As for what property is in the city. Oglebay park and many of the attached roads such as kelly drive/Lee drive, etc.

Sounds like an insurance scam, if those carts are old i bet the ranch on it...but this is Wheeling, the 'old money' will get away with this too, just like several other fires over the past couple decades.

Everyone tries to avoid taxes. If they have the option, so what? If the city decides to be involved, do they even have the jurisdiction? Vandals, surely, nasty, vile creeps no matter what the reason.

I bet the CC was scrambling - no pun intended - to find some replacement carts today - no members want to WALK - for heavens' sake!

Sounds like some really stupid comments here.

"Clearly, the club has done this to avoid city property taxes."

Um, how does this article make you reach this conclusion? What properties out further are in Wheeling city limits? I know that Tierra and Clinton Hills are also technically Triadelphia.

I think it is interesting that the country club is not located in the city of Wheeling, even though properties further out on Route 88 are within city limits. Clearly, the club has done this to avoid city property taxes. So if the Wheeling fire department chooses to support the investigation of this fire, shouldn't the city be reimbursed by the club for the costs of these investigative services??
