Alligator Found In Big Wheeling Creek

Reptile captured Thursday in Marshall County

MOUNDSVILLE - If you are planning to wade into Big Wheeling Creek, you might want to watch your toes.

On Thursday evening, some folks sitting on the edge of the creek in Marshall County near the Shoemaker Mine bridge made a startling discovery - an alligator was making its way through the water near where they were sitting.

While the reptile was only about 2 1/2 feet long, its snout and mouth full of teeth caught the spectators' attention. They called Marshall County's 911 dispatchers, who relayed the information to Marshall County Animal Control Officer Jim Noice.

"I went out there last night about 7, but it was getting dark by the time we spotted it again," Noice said. "I told the people I would be out in the morning to catch it."

However, a small crowd gathered at the creek bank as word spread about an alligator in the water. Noice said someone put a net in the water and managed to corral the frisky reptile.

On Friday, Noice had the alligator at the Animal Control Center on Western Avenue in Moundsville. The reptile was not too keen on the idea of having its picture taken, but Noice was able to pick it up without too much trouble.

"I'm taking him over to the animal shelter, and it will eventually be taken to an alligator rescue agency," Noice added.

While it is unusual to find an alligator in Big Wheeling Creek, Noice said another larger alligator was captured in Fish Creek about a year ago.

"It's irresponsible pet owners who do this, and it's not fair to the alligators or to the people along the creeks," Noice said. "People have been known to throw piranhas in the river, alligators in the creeks and sometimes let snakes go, too."

The alligator found Thursday appeared healthy and well-fed. Noice speculated it was feeding well off the crayfish, minnows and other fish in the well-stocked creek. However, he said the alligator would not have lived much longer, as it would not survive colder temperatures.

Earlier this week, Noice responded to a call about a possible mountain lion or bobcat in the Mozart area. He said while nothing was found, there are coyotes and other wild animals roaming the county.

"I would warn anyone who comes across a wild or exotic animal not to try and capture it themselves. They should call animal control and let us handle it. We have the equipment to take care of these things, and it can be very dangerous for the public," Noice said.

Within the past five years, Marshall County animal control officers have captured more than 500 raccoons and responded to numerous calls of loose snakes including a 9-foot boa constrictor, which was found in a dresser drawer in the owner's house.

Thanks & a big "ooh-rah" to u USMC (from a former Marine Mom;)I will try your suggestions, but again, what is wrong with this picture if we have to make our backyards like NSA? Now I know where the saying, "Kill 'em all; let God sort 'em out," came from. lol.

And to u Repman: u r correct about them dying this winter. But people have been killed in Florida by them as have pets & I'm afraid if things keep on the way they have, children. I am old enough to remember the 50's & their almost extinction for purses & shoes. Seeing one of those in Fl. required a trip to an "alligator farm." But now they are like deer up here. And BTW, have u seen the pic. of a HUGE gator carrying a deer in its' mouth taken from a helo or the one where it tried to eat a python? Both are true; ck. snopes AND Nat. Geo. I had my reptile & amphibian badge in Girl Scouts, so have been interested in alligators as well as big crocs. called, "Salties" b

graysongs, "goodboy - I don't know what kind of La-La Land you live in, but where I live there are sometimes aggressive drunks panhandling at stop lights and such." Where do YOU live? GS" I choose to drive with my top down so closing the window is not an option." What do you do in the winter? GS"I live in and travel around a medium-sized city with no shortage of idiots." That I believe. Of course, you're among the ranks.

I'm sorry. As a person who has dedicated a lot of my life to studying reptiles, especially crocodilians, the comments made earlier suggesting they are "ruthless killing machines" that are overpopulated and should be shot to defend domestic animals and human life are ludicrous. It is this kind of moronic attitude that has led to the decline of predators (not just crocodilians either) worldwide. Defend human life? Are you kidding me? The animal in question was merely 2.5 feet in total length. 2/3 of an alligator is body and tail, one third is head. His teeth would be about 1-3 millimeters in length. Superficial injury at worst. So to even suggest this animal would be life-threatening is just plain stupid. Should idiotic ******** buy alligators as pets? No. Because they release them when they learn they DO outgrow their tank. The animal is the victim here. Without being caught, he would have frozen this winter. I hope they place him somewhere nice.

Little alligator found in big creek. Donald Trump says, "This little gator deserves a second chance!" We all know Donald Trump is a man of second chances, just ask his barber.

Just another exotic pet some goof dumped!

A full investigation needs done to find the owner.

Cast away exotic pets are now theatening the delicate balance of the food chain in this country.

The lion fish for example is now killing off native fish all along the eastern coast. It is an Asian species that was introduced when someone dumped one in the ocean.

These people need to be fined heavily and imprisoned when caught.

In Florida, poachers prefer to hunt gators at night. They simply float along with high powered flood lights. Gator eyes are very easy to see, and quite ominous!

Most alligators are scared of people it's especially ones that are only 2 feet long. They get closer to humans down south partially because morons feed them. I'd be more afraid of some of the dogs some of you r.edneck.s keep around here.

graysongs, " I've had enough occasions of street drunks swinging bottles and knives to know I don't plan to be the defenseless moron." My question, is what are you doing near people and places like that?

GS,"I've had one heart attack and don't plan to have another because I have to beat one of these idiots with my hands. They are not worth it."

again, what kind of people and places are you hanging around? good lord, if this is where you're spending your time, then you're getting what you deserve.

We are the ones that found the alligator, he wasn't really threatening. He was more scared than anything once he was caught. He was very cute. We caught him with a net so he would not be harmed and would not harm any children. Many parents take their children where he was lurking and go fishing. Our main concern was that no one get hurt, especially a child.

I use an inner and outer perimeter of deer fencing on garden AND when I see them on property they get fired upon with a bottle rocket, which works very very well for at least a couple days. (Bethlehem)

Yeah, but not up here they don't. Come late October it'd have been a gator-cicle.

goodboy - 2.5 foot alligators grow or does that little fact just evade you somehow? I don't hunt. Don't kill things. Just don't plan to stand there and let some fool kill me should I happen into such a situation. Or the savagely trained pit bull that some moron taught to be aggressive and then lets it out on the street.

I hear they taste just like chicken. As in so many other animals, they aren't managed like they should be esp.in Florida. It would have died. Anyway, it's not alligators I'm concerned about; it's the D*** deer that are so overpopulated without predators that it should be open season all yr. on them. Besides being a real road threat, they eat most everything with almost nothing detering them. Right now hubby is on his way to "Dicks" to get some bird-shot since pellets won't keep them out of our fenced garden. I remember when I was a kid & no one ever saw a deer who wasn't hunting. Now, even a loud whistle, my dogs, or even a pellet in the butt won't stop 'em. Yeah, I loved "Bambi" too & actually am an animal rights person, but people come 1st. I didn't climb this high outta the primidoral soup to be pestered by an over populated, but cute, mammal that threatens my safely every time I get into my car.

graysongs, "Are you so dense that you can't distinguish between "innocent" life and that of one who would attack and do harm to a person? "

yes, this 2.5 foot human killing machine. You can just see in it's eyes that all it thinks about is eating some human.

You carry a gun because you're a fearful person. And you probably like to kill things.
