Mollohan Wrong In ACORN Vote

The Intelligencer
POSTED: September 21, 2009

U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., did not represent his constituents well in supporting the controversial, rotten ACORN organization last week.

We think most West Virginians are upset about the cozy relationship between the federal government and ACORN - the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Mollohan's excuse for supporting ACORN simply won't wash.

During a speech Saturday in Weirton, Mollohan, who represents this region of the state, attempted to defend his vote for ACORN. It was cast on a procedural issue Mollohan accused Republicans of using as a "gotcha" against Democrats.

The effect of the measure House members voted on was to cut off federal funding for ACORN, which depends upon taxpayers for millions of dollars in support each year.

But Mollohan was incorrect - as he knows - in attempting to portray the ACORN vote as a partisan one. The measure to cut off funding to ACORN passed by a 345-75 vote. One hundred seventy-two of Mollohan's fellow Democrats, as well as 173 Republicans, voted in favor of it. Just 75 representatives, including Mollohan and U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, also D-W.Va., voted "no."

Mollohan, then, clearly is in the minority even in his own Democratic Party.

Mollohan claimed Saturday that he is defending ACORN because he does not believe "a few rotten apples spoil a barrel."

But it has become apparent that the rot in ACORN is widespread. As many Americans know, there are videotapes of ACORN operatives in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore giving advice to a man and woman they believed to have been a prostitute and her pimp. The ACORN officials advised them on how to dodge the law and taxes in setting up a house of prostitution and using children smuggled in from abroad as prostitutes.

The man and woman who made the videotapes were working undercover as citizen journalists. They have said they have similar tapes from ACORN offices in other cities.

But the current scandal is far from the only one involving ACORN. Last year its operatives were caught helping people to register to vote illegally in several cities. According to one report, more than two dozen ACORN operatives were caught red-handed in that operation.

Mollohan may have been attempting to make a preemptive strike against the press on Saturday, when he used an analogy in regard to misbehavior at ACORN.

Inappropriate behavior can be found in many professions, the congressman noted. He singled out the press: "A reporter with the New York Times made up stories and won awards for them. And they were not real. They were factually made up. But that doesn't indict the New York Times or all printed press," Mollohan said.

Indeed, such an incident occurred. The Times fired those responsible - as would any newspaper of which we are aware.

In a similar situation, however, ACORN did not fire a wrongdoer. He was the organization's co-founder, Wade Rathke. Several years ago, Rathke's brother, Dale, was caught embezzling about a million dollars from ACORN. Wade Rathke helped cover up the incident - from law enforcement and most ACORN board members. Dale Rathke remained on the ACORN payroll for years after the embezzlement. Wade Rathke remained ACORN's chief organizer until 2008.

ACORN has been thoroughly rotten for years. Mollohan should be ashamed for attempting to keep our tax dollars flowing to the organization.

Mollohan is wrong most of the time. The proper approach is " Replace Mollohan" "When" NOW. Replace Alan Mollohan****

They say that Christopher Columbus was the first Democrat. When he left to discover America, he didn't know where he was going. When he got there he didn't know where he was. And it was all done on a government grant.

ProudVet - Hoopie is one of those "Catholics" who goes according to the "Nancy Pelosi Catechism". You know, she likes to go straighten out the Pope from time to time on what the Church really teaches and how "social justice" requires the unimpeded slaughter of unborn children and limitless financial support for Planned Parenthood, the most racist and murderous organization in human history bar none.

promo61 - I appreciate your kind comments. I think it's important to skewer the rants of the lefties with logic and then, mockery because that's what they deserve. Those who voted ObaMao and especially those who continue to support this patently foolish agenda voted to destroy my country and my way of life. Yes, they are, in fact, the enemy. We need to show them for what they are and crush them without mercy.

Now thats funny right there, I don't care who you are!

What do you call a democrat with any sense of honor and conscience? A Suicide risk!

I have another question: Point of order: How many liberals out there can recite the “Pledge of Allegiance"? Seriously......1,2,3 go!

wvhoopie 09-21-09 10:15 PM graysongs, I hope you enjoy saturating yourself in bitterness and anger. The world must look pretty glum looking through those glasses. Good luck with the issues. Love and charity are hard to see when one is so bitter. ================================================ I have been off the net for a while but I am glad to see that things haven't changed with the hate and envy shown by the same "people?" on every issue. Of all people who SHOULD NEVER talk about the "Love and charity are hard to see when one is so bitter" it would be wvhoopie. She has displayed the most venomous mouth I have ever seen or heard. She is a brain dead Liberal so it goes with the territory and that shall never change!

Graysongs - your arguments are lucid, logical and easy to follow. Those two ran out of ammunition quickly and descended into personal rancor. That is analagous to the methodology of liberals in a nutshell. Wait until O destroys Paterson in NY for not playing ball. How many times must one be bitten by a snake before one realizes it is a snake? Some will be in denial forever.

wv26003 09-21-09 10:36 AM »Report Abuse I cannot wait until Congressman Mollohan is overwhelmingly re-elected in 2010. Why will this happen? Because the WV GOP has been in a state of total disarray for the last 8 years. Moan and complain, little ones, because nothing is going to change it. = )

zip, you are absolutely right. Mollohan is the newer version of Byrd. This state can not get it right. The Dems have controled this state for way too long. Look where it has gotten us: NOWHERE!!!!

hoopie - Yeah, yeah - your "love and charity" are so firmly entrenched that you vote for the party of the holocaust of abortion, international sex trafficking of minors, fraud and theft. There's no "charity" in giving away other peoples' money, Dead Ted Kennedy and Botoxed Nancy Pelosi and their brand of "Catholicism" notwithstanding.

wv26003, what exactly is a "Republican Fundamentalist Church", pray tell? Does it differ 180 degrees from what was going on in Rev. Wright's church. Please enlighten us all.

hoopie - I wasn't there for a vacation, but it was instructive for me to see the widespread disdain for this administration and its lackeys across many lines of ages, occupations and a variety of other distinguishing factors. Also, having passed through the DC area the day after the huge protest march and talking to some who were there for it was quite an encouragement. His support is exclusively among the whack job committed lefties and the welfare class. I hope you enjoy each other's company.

You people have been voting for Democrats like Alan The Thief and KKK Big Daddy Byrd for 50 years and you have been 50th in economic terms for 50 years.

Do ya see a correlation?

Lorenzo - There will be no "health care reform". This man is arrogant beyond comprehension and foolish. He is surrounded by socialists who see themselves at the top of the oligarchial pyramid and supported by ignorant and vicious thugs and union goons. There won't be any jobs either, by the way.

Thanks, but I actually do get it. And thinking about ACORN doesn't hurt my head at all. They can't get off the front page fast enough.

I know too many folks, all ages, with no health care at all. Getting laid off should not be a death sentence. Now that hurts.

wonderwhy - No surprise there. You have unsubstantiated allegations and personal attacks on the religious beliefs and practices of a poster who knocks your silly leftist views for a loop every time. You like to trot out your "Christian" ways when you think it will help you win an argument. Like dear Fr. Hoopie. It's called an "appeal to a higher authority" and is always employed by those who otherwise cannot support their positions. Logic, law and reasoning are beyond you.
