Business as Usual Despite Filming
By MICHAEL SCHULER For The IntelligencerThe filming of ''Unstoppable'' won't force many businesses in Bellaire to close their doors, according to James Mahathey, location manager for 20th Century Fox.
During a meeting with business and community leaders at the Graystone building Wednesday, Mahathey said traffic will be permitted through the streets during most of the filming and roads will remain open to intermittent traffic.
About 80 people attended the meeting.
Some had expressed fears that the ''closing'' of the streets, Nov 2-9, would prevent traffic from getting through the village and ultimately force them to close their doors during filming times. Mahathey said some streets will be closed, but only for 15- to 30-minute periods while shots are being filmed. Belmont Street will remain open during the entire production, but traffic will be stopped while scenes involving the train and the use of a helicopter are made. Most of those stops will be comparable to a stop at a traffic light, Mahathey said. Delivery trucks will be able to make their deliveries to most businesses. Banks will also be open, with the possible exception of the Chase Bank ''roundhouse.''
It was unclear if pedestrian traffic will be able to use the bank. The main Chase office on Belmont Street will remain open.
Some business owners said they would adjust their schedules to accommodate the filming of the movie. Police will be used to redirect traffic through the affected areas.
Sidewalks will be open, and people will be permitted to go into stores and businesses, Mahathey said. People will be asked, however, to wait for ''a few minutes'' when a shot is being filmed.
Mahathey also said he will be around during filming to deal with issues and complaints that may arise.
Any business that does suffer a loss of patrons because of the film will be reimbursed, Mahathey said. He noted the filmmakers will compare the previous year's sales for affected businesses and other data to get that figure.
While there will be some detours, Mahathey said signs will be made to direct people who have to make changes in their routes to their businesses.
He also said he will be working with the Bellaire Local School District regarding bus transportation.
Mahathey also said he wanted to dispel some rumors. Residents will not be fined if they step out of their homes while filming is taking place, and the train will not be traveling at 110 mph, he said.
The train will cross the stonebridge from West Virginia and proceed north on the tracks. A special council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday to further discuss the filming.
''Unstoppable'' is about a runaway train and stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pine.
