Ohio River Basin Caucus Formed

By IAN HICKS Staff Writer
POSTED: October 27, 2009

WHEELING - Home to more than 8 percent of the nation's population, the Ohio River Basin's voice in Congress may get a little louder.

U.S. Reps. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Steve Driehaus, D-Ohio, on Monday announced the creation of the Ohio River Basin Congressional Caucus, a bipartisan interest group Capito believes will help lawmakers ensure the economic viability of the region for years to come.

Capito said the basin is home to about 25 million people - more than 8 percent of the United States' population. Yet, she said, the region doesn't receive the attention given other regions such as the Mississippi River and Chesapeake Bay watersheds.

With 55 Congressional districts in 14 states covering the region, Capito said the purpose of the caucus is to "raise the awareness of the Ohio River Valley and highlight the river's impact" on the nation's economy, infrastructure and agriculture. She noted major goals of the caucus will include securing funding for environmental restoration and cleanup, educational outreach, as well as discussing how pending legislation will affect the Ohio River Basin.

Originally from Glen Dale, Capito said she's crossed the Ohio River thousands of times without giving it much thought.

"It's one of those things ... you kind of take it for granted," she said, citing funding to keep the basin's drinking water supply clean and the maintenance of river infrastructure such as locks and dams as major issues facing the region today.

Capito and Driehaus will serve as co-chairs for the caucus. The group has been in the planning stages for about a month, and Capito said it already has garnered a positive reaction from her Congressional colleagues.

According to Capito, U.S. Reps. Charles Wilson, D-Ohio, and Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., are both on board with the caucus. Other members include Tim Ryan, D-Ohio; Rick Boucher, D-Va.; Jason Altmire, D-Pa.; and Geoff Davis, R-Ky., with more expected to sign on soon, she said.

In a time when legislation on issues such as health care reform and cap-and-trade has driven a wedge between Republicans and Democrats, Capito said keeping party politics out of the caucus will be key to its success.

She noted while cap-and-trade's effect on coal transports on the Ohio River may be something the caucus will have to deal with, she doesn't want to see the topic hinder the group's growth.

This group was formed so all the funding doesnt end up in the Missisippi River or the Chesapeake so I would reconsider your comments unless you want to lose more of your jobs

When you place term limits in the House of Representatives, like the State of Ohio has, you allow the lobbyists and special interests to have the power because youll have a constant influx of new reps who cant stay long enough to know any better.

Former

Forgive me. I attended a government run public school!

Yes, I am an extreme person-if by "extreme" you mean "extremely dedicated to restoring the US to greatness" and "extreme in my defense of our Constitution, our national security, our borders, our way of life, our English language and our morals".

I am a registered Republican and so I don't think I could ever be elected in West Virginia. I have often thought of making a run at the Governor's chair but there are too many well-connected Good Ole Boy DEMOCRATS standing in line.

If they did away with straight party voting, I think that Democrats would win fewer elections.

Just my two cents, for what that's worth.

I'd vote for Ellis in a New York Minute. I'd even register dead people like Acorn for him. One thing, though, Ellis, I think you meant 100 Senators, not 50. But half of them are brain-dead all the time, so you are excused :)!

Hey Ellis, I see you are finalizing your running platform. Looks good so far. If you add "Formulate sensible energy solutions with NO Carbon taxes", I'll vote for you.

Just what we need, another special interest "caucus".

How about a "caucus" made up of 435 Congressman, 50 Senators and 1 President? This "caucus" could do what is right for AMERICA instead of destroying our future by wasting tax dollars to buy votes.

1) Strong National Defense.

2) End the power of the Federal Reserve.

3) Ban speculation (and artificial price hikes) in commodities such as oil, gold, copper, wheat, etc.

4) Phase out Social Security.

5) Pass REAL health care reform that uses market based solutions.

6) TERM LIMITS and election reform.

7) Nationwide Tort Reform.

8) Slash spending across the board. Start making plans to phase out income taxes in place of a national sales tax. Whatever amount is collected THIS YEAR in taxes would fund government NEXT YEAR. Without a guaranteed perpetual revenue, government would have to operate like a company.

9) Immigration reform. Close the borders.Deport all illegals.

10) End the Drug W
