Deputies Hold Boy Who Fled Flu Shot

Student refused; was held down for vaccination

WHEELING - It took the strength of two sheriff's deputies to keep a middle schooler still enough to receive a shot of the swine flu, or H1N1, vaccine at a recent clinic.

During a regular Wheeling-Ohio County Health Board meeting Tuesday, health department Administrator Howard Gamble told board members about the student's attempt to flee Wheeling Middle School during a vaccination clinic held there last Friday.

He noted the boy's mother could not bear to watch the scene and left the gymnasium. Out of apparent fear of receiving the injection, the student ran out of the building. The school's resource officer, Ohio County Sheriff's Deputy John Haglock, coaxed the boy back inside. Once at the shot station, however, Haglock apparently needed some help keeping the boy still, and another deputy assisted.

"He tried to run. I looked over and saw two sheriff's deputies holding a kid down," Gamble said. "Mom took off, she couldn't take it. You had one nurse with the needle, two deputies holding him, one nurse is grabbing hands - because that's what they want to do, to go after the needle. And that's the last thing you want."

Gamble said as soon as the nurse gave the boy his injection and told him he was done, he hopped up like nothing had happened.

"For the most part they go very easy. As far as the shots, every once in awhile you have to hold down one or two - but that's why mom is there or dad is there," Gamble said.

He added after the meeting that Friday's incident was the only time Ohio County deputies have held a student during a shot.

"They're mostly there for parking and directions. They also know the kids. ... They were our first line of contact when setting up the clinics," Gamble said.

Neither Sheriff Pat Butler nor Haglock could be reached for comment. A sheriff's department official said Haglock is on vacation for the next two weeks.

During a clinic Tuesday at Bridge Street Middle School, similar scenes took place - though not quite as dramatic and not involving officers of the law. A couple sets of parents could be seen keeping their children from wiggling away while a nurse quickly administered the vaccine.

Ten-year-old Austin Price, the son of Jennifer and Josh Price, decided to take the shot standing up and with no assistance from his mom or dad. He even smiled for a photograph.

And on a scale of 1-10, how painful was the shot?

A "4," he answered.

By 7:30 p.m., 391 students from Bridge Street and Elm Grove and Middle Creek elementary schools had been vaccinated. Gamble expected that by the clinic's end at 8 p.m., more than 400 would have received the inoculation.

The final two student clinics in Ohio County are:

  • For students of Warwood Middle School, Corpus Christi, Warwood and West Liberty Elementary schools from 3:30-8 p.m. Thursday at Warwood Middle School Gym.
  • For students of Wheeling Park High School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at WPHS Activities Center.

Tuesday's health board meeting was held in the county commission board room - located on the second floor of the City-County Building - due to the health department's board room being used for storage.

The thing that makes this particularly offensive, other than the fact of public officials committing felony aggravated assault and battery with complete impunity, is the fact that - according to the Federal Trade Commission - as of November 11, 2009 THERE IS NO VACCINE FOR H1N1 FLU! What kind of poison was the boy being injected with??? To read the FTC statement go to *******theherbdoc****/swineflu/

seeinred: I am not sure voting Republican is the answer, either - vote for candidates who will follow the constitution of the US - if we still have one by the time the next election rolls around.

Ladydiamond, I wholly agree with you. This whole thing is bait and switch. They want us to freak out about swine flu and not pay attention to the crap they are trying to pull. Dont fall for it and keep your eyes and ears open! New Years Resolution: vote republican!

I have lived my life by three guiding principals. In reverse order, The Constitution of the United States, The Constitution of the State of Maine and first and foremost by the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures as written in the 1611 King James Version.

If a law passed by the politicians in Augusta violates either Constitutions, it is as far as I am concerned, no law at all. If it violates the Word of God, then it is not only no law, it is to be fought as well. As an example, the politicians in Maine recently passed legislation making the abomination of homosexual marriage legal. It was signed into law by Governor Baldacci.. Within 100 days, groups led by Rev. Bob Emrich got over 100,000 signatures to put that law up on the ballot for a peoples veto in November. While Baldacci, his minions and his ilk continue to try and make the abominations of homosexuality and child murder acceptable and legal, thanks to God fearing men like Rev. Bob Emrich, the people of Maine have their voices h

People really should get a grip. Shelly Hanson should be ashamed of herself for not getting all the facts before she reported this incident in the way that she did. She made it sound like the child was held down forcibly and made to get s shot. Actually, the child did run and did have to be coaxed back into the school but it was the mother who asked for assistance in holding the child still. It was a completely innocent situation that has been blown out of proportion.

As a nurse practitioner, if I bodily restrain someone who refuses treatment, even holding their hand, even a middle schooler, I can be criminally charged with "battery". Law enforcement are held to the same standard where "health care" is concerned. But, under Obozo, The Constitution and the rules of law do not apply? This is an extremely bad precedent!

There is also squalene and mercury in the shots, even thought the media says they are NOT - READ THE VACCINE INSERTS. Also, they are giving out the LIVE virus in the nasal vaccine - how dumb is this? It is a mechanism to spread the virus even more. It will live in the nasal membranes and get passed out to spread. Yay. Ladydiamond is right.

I agree that the whole H1N1 situation is BULL***t. And I agree that the kid shouldn't HAVE to get the shot. If mom was out of the room, they should have sent the kid with her.I also agree that the cops shouldn't hold the kid down.......BUT, maybe we should be a little easier on the officers. These guys work for a living like everybody else, and we all do things at work that we don't want to do or maybe think is stupid. If the boss says "Go help the kids get the shots", they have to go do it. Those cops probably think it was a stupid situation too. Maybe that's why they didn't want to comment on it.

Shark: Obama has called this an emergency. Implications?: This gives Sebelius the authority to bypass federal rules when opening alternative care sites, such as offsite hospital centers at schools or community centers if hospitals seek permission. SHE can declare martial law! SHE now has the power - more than Congress and Obama when it comes to this "emergency" - false emergency, in my opinion.

rover1958: "Fact: there is a shortage of H1N1 vaccine." No, there is not a shortage - the CFR had a meeting where they came up with the strategy to create a "false shortage" - to make people want the shot. They did this because many people are not getting the vaccine. Just google "CFR vaccine shortage" you will find several articles on what I speak of.

Popeye: YES - it IS creepy. And the law enforcement involvement is likely federally directed.

There appears to be a mutation of the H1N1 loose in the Ukraine that is vastly more dangerous (10/30/09):” Gregory Hartl said the team was being pulled together by the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, which goes by the acronym GOARN.

The team will travel early next week to the eastern European country, which has closed schools and banned public meetings in response to a spike in cases of acute respiratory illness believed to be H1N1 with a fatality rate of over 1%.

Media reports included descriptions of blood filled lungs, raising visions of the 1918 pandemic, which also involved swine H1N1 that jumped to humans and was efficiently transmitted. Samples have already been sent to London for analysis, and immediate release of initial sequence data would be useful.”

"Goggle" the info above, you will be REALLY scared at some of the claims!

@VERN33: Why do you think it's only half the story? Just because the cops don't want to talk, there should be no story? This is one of the few real news stories I've seen on this site.

Well, they could spare a few extra PO-LEASE at the school because Wheeling is a low crime area.

There are never any violent crimes in Wheeling, despite the lies printed by this paper. Criminals avoid Wheeling due to the two-man cruiser law, and the local police departments' nationwide reputation for weapons security.

Didn't they do this same thing in Jonestown back in the 70's? If people wouldn't drink the CoolAid, they'd hold them down and force them to drink it, or inject them with poison?
