Let Moderates Influence Bill
By The IntelligencerIt has been said that politics is the art of compromise. Not in the mind of Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. He is telling moderate Democrats that he simply doesn't want to hear what they have to say about the massive, expensive health care bill now wending its way through the Senate.
Senate Democrats were united in a vote Saturday to proceed with debate on the bill. However, several have indicated they don't like the measure in its current form. They also have expressed reservations about "the public option" - a government-run health insurance program.
Brown's reaction: "I don't want four Democratic senators dictating to the other 56 of us and to the rest of the country," he said. He claims, despite evidence to the contrary, that a government-run insurance program has the support of the American public.
We think Brown is mistaken on several counts.
Liberal Democrats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives already have marginalized their Republican peers. Though GOP lawmakers have suggested their own health care reform bill, the liberals have dismissed it without even the courtesy of debate. Sensible suggestions, including tort reform, have been ignored by the liberals.
That means Brown and company are ignoring the wishes of tens of millions of Americans, including those who elected the Republicans to Congress.
Now, however, he and other liberals want to shuffle some of their own number off to the sidelines.
If that happens, it will represent hypocrisy at its worst. Brown claims he doesn't want the moderates
"dictating" to his faction, but that already has happened. One of the moderates is Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. As we have reported, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid already allowed her to dictate terms of the bill, in a way. She sought and received a special $100 million allocation for her state in exchange for her Saturday vote to proceed with the bill.
Apparently Brown doesn't mind being dictated to when the American taxpayer has to pay the bill. But when moderates want to tone down some of the measure's more outrageous features; well, that's a different story.
Obviously, we hope Brown changes his mind. The moderates are making important, valid points. They should not allow the slim majority in the Senate to run roughshod over them and the millions of people they represent.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Why not just expand Medicare to cover all? It surely wouldn't take that much tweaking. And no add on for ignorant a s s holes whose vote needs bought. If you can't get behind affordable health care for everyone, then who and what are you representing anyway? Certainly not your constituents. I sure hope that in the next election that the voters remember who was and was not FOR health care reform. Those against are simply playing partisan politics of the worst kind.

Of course most Americans want affordable health care! It just that this healthcare bill wont deliver lower premium costs. Most Americans are against this health care bill. Public option does enjoy popularity as a tool of price competition but how will that work when the CBO says the option "would typically have premiums that were somewhat higher than the average premiums for the private plans in the exchanges".

Most of you ignorant phucks (as Gray says) wouldn't know what liberals really believe in cause you really don't want to. You only believe what your radio and Pox tells you. You have no minds to think for yourself and even less intelligence. The majority of Americans want a public option and affordable health care. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the phucking porch.

Let us look closely at liberal and socialist values. I should not feel guilt for making messes which bring undesirable obstacles to my life journey. I did what I wanted to suit myself and I don't have what I should have been amassing for my advancement. Somebody else should make me whole. I should be entitled to a strangers benefits ? That how it works ? Or am I a victim because I wasted my life earnings on custom wheel covers, beauty shops, clothes fashion, keeping up with the Jones and now the clown award has been presented me .. This actually sounds like lack of discipline and mental insincerity.

Life saving health care to middle class America. 11-24-6:11 .The liberal mindset has been difficult for me to grasp. I have always had to take total responsibility for what life delivered my address and never learned to be a slacker or accept so so as good enough. I like the knowing if I do wrong I will be squashed. Means I am in the running for reward for right.

Nancy, can you possible read and comprehend the following story from AP: “President Obama has shattered the budget record for first-year presidents -- spending nearly double what his predecessor did when he came into office and far exceeding the first-year tabs for any other U.S. president in history. In fiscal 2009 the federal government spent $3.52 trillion -- $2.8 trillion in 2000 dollars, which sets a benchmark for comparison.” I don’t see the word “Bush” in the above , do YOU?????? It says “SPENDING”, I don’t see the words “INHERITED FROM BUSH” , do YOU??? It is the OBAMA DEFICIT and the OBAMA RECESSION , OWN IT!

NancySI, a few of the “outrageous features” of the government health insurance scam bill to which this editorial may refer are: The resulting increase in employment cost when unemployment is above 10% and rising (SEC. 4980H. EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE HEALTH COVERAGE, or pay a tax of $400 per year per employee), The 372 BILLION DOLLAR increase in taxes during a recession (JOINT COMMITTEE ON TAXATION JCX-55-09, November 19, 2009 report), The new taxes on private health insurance (SEC. 4980I. EXCISE TAX ON HIGH COST EMPLOYER-SPONSORED HEALTH COVERAGE, “40 percent of the excess benefit” yikes!), and last and probably least, the 300 MILLION DOLLAR bribe to buy the vote of a Louisiana DEMOCRAT Senator.
