Keeping Children Safe on Halloween

October 29, 2011
The Intelligencer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Thousands of children will be roaming area neighborhoods at night during the next few days, stopping at front doors with the announcement, "Trick or Treat!"

Halloween is among the most enjoyable times of the year for children - and for many adults who enjoy seeing the youngsters in costume and rewarding them with candy or other treats.

But it can be a very dangerous time, too.

One concern is vicious adults tampering with "treats." We don't remember the last such report from the good people of the Ohio Valley, but there are simple ways to guard against harm. Tell children not to eat anything they receive until they get home and adults can conduct an inspection.

Thoughtful adults can help by providing only pre-packaged treats. One woman we know was especially kind: She attached a note bearing her name and address to every treat she handed out.

Of far more concern is traffic safety, of course. The key precaution there is to have an adult or responsible older child go with the youngsters as they make their rounds.

Halloween always seems to be a fun time in our area.

This year, let's be certain it stays that way.
