Gas Now Target Of Extremists

January 20, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

What will it take to satisfy the global warming crowd? Nothing less than the destruction of America's modern economy and a drastic reduction in the quality of life in our country, it sometimes seems.

More evidence that is the goal of a few ultra-liberals was provided a few days ago by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Exploitation of massive new reserves of natural gas, sometimes to replace the coal global warming alarmists hate, may be a bad thing, according to the MIT study.

For years gas was referred to by many environmentalists as a relatively clean fuel. If we only had more of it to replace other sources of energy such as coal, we'd be better off, they agreed.

Now we do. Formations such as the Marcellus Shale hold gigantic quantities of gas. Some utilities plan to shut down coal-fired power plants and replace them with gas generating stations, in order to comply with federal rules intended to combat global warming.

The MIT researchers are concerned new supplies of gas will lower prices for the fuel to the point there will be little incentive for the energy industry to develop alternatives such as wind and solar power.

Costs for wind and solar power are far above those for electricity generated by coal and gas. Most consumers would rather pay the lower prices.

But liberals such as those at MIT want high-priced energy, regardless of what that does to Americans' standards of living and our competitiveness as an economy.

At some point, natural gas - which just happens to be helping West Virginians and Ohioans, as coal has done for generations - will become a target for environmental extremists. What is particularly distressing about their strategy is that, as the MIT study shows, they do not seem content to even finish their destruction of the coal industry before launching an attack on gas.

Let's hope thoughtful Americans begin to recognize the extremists' agenda - and say no to it.
