Keeping Ohio River Banks Beautiful

June 14, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

A sort of collective spring cleaning of more than 3,000 miles of riverbank - River Sweep 2012 - is scheduled for Saturday.

The annual River Sweep events enlist thousands of residents of states bordering the Ohio River to clean trash and junk from the stream's banks. It is a wonderful program, making what amounts to the Ohio Valley's watery backyard more attractive for those of us who live here - and more appealing for visitors and those interested in economic development.

River Sweep is a success because so many people spend a few hours each year participating. Now, volunteers for this Saturday's cleanup are being sought.

If you are interested, you can call 800-359-3977 for more information, or you can visit the website www.orsanco.org. Should you decide at the last minute you'd like to help, feel free to show up at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in front of WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.

River Sweep has been one of the most effective mobilizations of area residents for many years. If you can, we encourage you to help make it a success again this year.
