In the midst of a natural gas drilling boom that is drawing people to the area from across the nation, the community of Cameron is growing with new school facilities, redevelopment of its historic sites and a little help from Rotary International.
The Moundsville Rotary Club has established a satellite club in Cameron in hopes of helping area professionals get better organized to serve the community and the world. The new Cameron club already has 12 members who are holding weekly meetings at 4 p.m. Tuesdays at the Cameron High School cafeteria, facilitated by members of the Moundsville club.
Cameron members include: Bill Harris, American Legion; Jason Bucher, director of Cameron Nursing & Rehab; Jack Cain, principal of Cameron High School; Pam Schimmel, librarian at Cameron High School; Cara Owens, manager BB&T; Mike Ramsden, teacher/Social Studies Department head, Cameron High School; Gibbs Davidson, teacher, CHS; Aaron Poling, athletic director, CHS; Tom Hart, director, Marshall County Emergency Management; Maria Rayl, Rayl Custom Cycle; Greg Galentine, owner, Cameron Floral Shoppe; and Wendy Clutter, principal, Cameron Elementary.

The group recently hosted its first guest speaker, Dave Knuth, executive director of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce. He told the club the chamber has 227 members, 18 board members and two additional office staff. He also outlined some networking opportunities offered by the chamber, including its Business After Hours, monthly breakfasts and annual Home and Business Expo.
Members also discussed how the new high/middle school complex currently under construction should be a nucleus for building the community, noting it offers an opportunity for expansion and excitement for the area.
The new school will put the heart back in Cameron, Harris said.
Members also discussed how to network with the community and help in the revitalization of Cameron. It was noted there are two groups already working on preserving and restoring historic buildings and drawing people to Cameron, while the American Legion is working to refurbish a building in the center of town to be the post home as well as a community center.
Rotary leaders throughout the region are excited about the addition of the Cameron club.
Rotary is known as a service organization of 1.2 million serving others throughout the world. The key component of this organization is the Rotarian and the local clubs serving their local communities. Local business leaders serving by example with Service Above Self, said District Gov.-elect Greg Smith. Today is a great day with the new beginning of the Cameron satellite club. Our community and the world are a little better places to live with the commitment from those willing to serve.
All new members of the Cameron club will officially be inducted into Rotary at 4 p.m. July 10 at the high school. No meeting will be held July 3.
