The growth of the Hancock County Senior Wellness Center over the past decade has resulted in a change in the agency's day-to-day business name.
"Effective July 1 we'll be doing business as Hancock County Senior Services," said E. Mark Knabenshue, executive director. "The board of directors and I felt the change more accurately reflects the full scope of what we do on a daily basis."
Knabenshue stressed that the center, located at 647 Gas Valley Road, remains the Hancock County Senior Wellness Center. It serves as the administrative office for the agency.
Many of the services, programs and activities are provided to the aged and disabled of Hancock County at little or no cost. Hancock County Senior Services received its charter in September of 1976 and maintains its incorporated name of Committee for Hancock County Senior Citizens Inc. "We started in New Cumberland at 803 North Chestnut St. in a building which has since been torn down," said Knabenshue. "This November, we'll mark 10 years at the Gas Valley Road location."
Among the services offered at Hancock County Senior Services are eight in-home programs including Veterans Affairs personal care, regular and assisted transportation, WV State Health Insurance Program counseling for Medicare and Medicaid, Ensure dietary supplements, daily Soup 'n Salad luncheon, a full slate of fitness classes, legal aid referrals through WV Senior Legal Aid, education seminars, summer camp, senior picnic and Christmas Party, weekly bingo game and more.
